“Joyful mother” (Psa 113:9)
The expression, “Joyful mother,” is becoming a thing of the past. Nowadays we hear of tired mothers, harassed mothers and weeping mothers. Why is there such a radical shift from Bible days? Why are we not able to be Joyful Mothers? Women are finding their joy in seeking after knowledge and holding a post. They find joy in the company of colleagues and accomplishments. They fly from meetings to conferences, gather medals and certificates, build a house and buy a car. One day they find that life had passed them by. Their children are grown up. There is a gulf between them and children. Children are practically strangers to them. This is true of even mothers who are serving God. Later on in life when they turn back and see, they realize that they have missed the most important part of their life — family.
I want to tell every young girl who is getting married that she should set her eyes on her husband and children first. It is not wrong to take up a job but try for a light job than a killing one though that may mean lesser salary. You should be able to have rela xing times wi th yo ur husba nd, enjo y your pregna nc y, childbirth and children and get sufficient time for rest, relaxation and interaction with the extended family.
Isaac and Rebekah, Zechariah and Elizabeth, Joseph and Mary, Simon Peter and Mrs. Simon Peter, Aquilla and Priscilla were all closely knit couples. They grew up together after marriage. That takes time. You must have sufficient time and energy to spend with your husband and children. Otherwise it is impossible to understand their physical, emotional and spiritual needs. The woman is the anvil on which the family revolves.
Mary was able to go to the temple festival for three days with the family. She had understood her children well and that’s how she was able to say, “Do whatever He tells you” (Jn 2:5). Her labour for her children were not in vain. Her son James became an apostle and leader of the early church and other sons converted (Acts 1:14). I am sure she had no regrets when she looked back at her life.
You cannot rewind your life and undo the past. Family is a gift of God. Don’t lose it for something that glitters like gold. All that glitters is not gold. Homemaker — may her tribe increase!
