“Mother’s teaching is a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck” (Prov 1:8,9)
The priorities of motherhood are gradually changing. Today’s mother’s skull is full of the child’s achievements. Will they shine in studies? Will they become doctors? Can I send her to dance class? They are shuttled from one tuition to another. What is the most important thing a mother can give to a child, that they will remember forever? To me, it is genuine, unconditional love. Mothers’ overcrowded schedules and endless commitments have left millions of children love-starved. Children are considered a nuisance because they cut across our dreams.
First of all let us learn to see our children as a heritage from the Lord (Psa 127:3). The best we can do for them is to relax with them without thinking about the next work to be done, so that our faces will be relaxed. Just listen to whatever they have to tell you without getting shocked. Free conversation with them is a window to their hearts. Respond appropriately, gently, softy and lovingly. Without sounding like a teacher drop little pearls of wisdom here and there. A mother speaks wisely and teaches kindly (Prov 31:26). Don’t prevent them from disagreeing with you. Shutting their mouths will result in well-behaved children with stiffled emotions. Children taught by mothers do not succumb to peer pressure. They stand by their convictions. They have self- esteem and self-confidence. Children go through hard times. So it is important to understand them and be supportive. Social Workers say that many teens who committed suicide were troubled by the pressure to achieve. So never push them hard like Herodias (Mt 14:8).
Discipline is tough love. Set limits. Rude punishments and abuse should be replaced by loving discipline. Instead of giving orders left and right, give a few orders and expect them to be obeyed. Give them time to do their own thing instead of regulating all their activities. When they are old enough to understand, let them know why you expect them to do such and such a thing.
If anger is pushed aside and love dominates your dealings, surely your child will say, “I love mummy!”
