“Her children arise and call her blessed” (Prov 31:1)
Before your marriage you don’t think of children. You think of honeymoon and may be a new home and your dream job. But sooner or later you are going to have children.
You need to take care of your physical and mental health to have healthy babies. So cook well and eat well and be active. Do not postpone childbirth to beyond 30. You can gain 8-10 kg during pregnancy. Breastfeeding the baby for a minimum of one year keeps both mother and child healthy. Try to take a few years off your career so that you can have two children successively and bring them up. A single child will be a lonely child and will take more of your time. Baby and Child Care, a book by Dr. Benjamin Spock, gives excellent guidelines to bring up your baby upto 15 years. When they go to school, may be you can find a job.
Bringing up children is investment. It takes a lot of time and energy but the dividends will be great. If you neglect them during their early years, you will regret it for a lifetime. Your parents or in-laws or servants cannot give them ‘motherly’ care. Even though disciplining a child with a rod will become necessary now and then, love and understanding must be the rule. A child grows up to be a healthy and balanced adult in a happy home. So fill your home with joy and love, the two most needed ingredients to make a good citizen. If you rule with a rod and criticism, a child will be subdued, fearful and closed. When the child comes home from school, it should receive hugs, kisses and listening ears.
Teach your child the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. Use a Children’s Bible. This world is an unsafe place for children unless they are founded on the Word of God. Teach them to pray. Take them to church and send them to the Sunday Class. You will face many challenges on the way but you can overcome all the hurdles by the grace of God. Be watchful, protective and a bit suspicious wherever you may send them. A girl child is as precious as a boy child. Treat them equally, love and educate them equally and divide your property equally between all the children.
So brace yourself for motherhood and enjoy the joys of it. You will feel rewarded when your children rise up in life and call you, “Blessed!” like the children of the Proverbs 31 mother.
