“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart” (Col 3:23)
“Lydia, a dealer in purple cloth” (Acts 16:14). We read of many women who held jobs outside the home. Midwives, temple staff, palace staff, politicians and others. The housewife of Proverbs 31 also considered a field and bought it. Women have proved their mettle in almost every male bastion. There is an inflow of women into the workforce and it is increasing every day. There is a lot of good in it as much as lot of bad also. So you can take some precautionary measures before it is too late.
You should not be disappointed if you are not treated equally with a man. Whereas a man is accepted at face value, a woman is repeatedly rejected till she proves her worth by patience and perseverance. You may have to struggle even to secure your rightful place.
Now that you may have a fat purse, you may develop a tendency to be independent of your husband. This will lead to an unhealthy rift between you two. Though you may have a separate account, keep him informed of your dealings. Both of you should thank God for your income and give a sizeable portion to His work.
There is a spurt in sexual harassment incidents. There is a big difference between being feminine and flaunting sexuality. Work- place clothing should not be provocative. Keep sexually tinged comments out of workplace. You must be careful about the signals you are sending because they may be misinterpreted. If someone misbehaves, show an angry face then and there.
The National Commission of Women (NCW) has come out with the following code of conduct at the workplace, which is in tune with a Supreme Court judgment —
No unsavoury or sexist remarks, No innuendos, No forcible physical touching or brushing against any part of the body, No physical confinement against one’s will, No display of pornographic or offensive pictures, cartoons or pamphlets, No treating women employees as sex objects.
So, take care of yourself at your workplace.
