“A time to laugh” (Eccl 3:4)
More and more people are forgetting to laugh. They are hard into making a living that they have forgotten to live. “There is nothing better than a world where everybody is trying to make each other laugh,” said someone. “I wake up laughing every day. I get a kick out of life,” says Brace Willis.
Sarah was depressed and given up hope at 89 years of age. Yet, she was able to laugh at her own infirmity (Gen 18:13). When she became a mother she laughed all the more and made others laugh (Gen 21:6). I think God keeps laughing all the time because the world abounds with scoffers (Psa 2:4; 37:13; 59:8; Prov 1:26). So the righteous can also keep laughing all the time (Psa 52:6,7).
Jesus said, “Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh” (Lk 6:21). Everyone has their share of tears in this life; but God doesn’t feed us with tears all the time. There is a time to weep and there is a time to laugh too. Read a Joke Book, have family fun, make merry with friends and tickle yourself. Watch Laurel and Hardy or Tom and Jerry. God wants us to enjoy our life. Share good jokes with others at appropriate times. Laughter is the music of life. But don’t overdo it or hurt others by directing your jokes on them. When others joke, let a huge grin spread on your face. Don’t get hurt by their jokes on you. Learn to laugh at yourself. Learn to laugh at life; it will heal your wounds and bring down your blood pressure.
Abraham Lincoln said, “I laugh, because I must not weep.” What a deep truth lies buried in that laugh line! We all have enough sorrows to weep for a lifetime. But we must laugh, because we must not make life miserable for others. Lincoln was a superb story teller and quipster. He would recite stories with gusto, scratching his elbows and guffawing loudly as the punch lines neared. Let us catch his spirit.
Everything you need for a happy life is within you. The fruit of the Holy Spirit is JOY and we are filled with the Spirit. The Kingdom of God is JOY in the Holy Spirit and we can enjoy holy fun. Do you know India is one of the 35 saddest countries in the world? Let us rise up to the top of the happiest countries.
Happiness is the best cosmetic. So laugh when you wake up, laugh through the day and go to bed laughing.
