“I want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety” (1 Tim 2:9a)
God created man and woman without dress because it was an age of innocence. When they violated God’s command their innocence was lost. Men and women became prone to temptation and sin. So God covered them and sent them out of the garden. A naked woman will stir up the lust of men. A covered woman can easily relate to the opposite sex. The more uncovered she is, the more distraction she causes. It causes the eyes of men to rove over her anatomy, kindling his feelings of sex. That’s why the Bible speaks so much about the control of eyes. A woman who exposes too much or wears too tight invites men’s eyes to feast on her body. It does not stop there. It fires his imagination and can lead to crimes.
For Christians it is neither Indian culture not western culture, it is only Bible culture. The Bible’s clear teaching is modesty and decency. Surprisingly very little is said about men’s clothing. That underlines the woman’s responsibility. Whatever a woman wears, she needs to stand before the mirror, bend down, turn around and see her back and make sure if she is exposing any part of the body that requires covering. If awkward, she must change. Respect people’s remarks. It is shocking even in churches to see women with plunging neckline that makes you turn away. The pants are so tight that it appears, especially if it is skin colour, as if she is not wearing any bottom. If the dress is thin and light coloured, you must wear proper innerwear. The top should come down to cover your lowest back. Now the fashion is to wear the pant so low, that on bending forward the lowest back is shockingly exposed. Yet women seem oblivious to the shock waves they are sending around. Where are we going?
A woman should look like a woman. That’s why the Bible says that women should not wear men’s clothing (Dt 22:5). Though times are changing there are parents who bring up their girls in beautiful girlish dresses. Let’s learn from them.
How would you feel when you testify about Christ to an orthodox non-Christian? You don’t have to be semi-nude to be pretty. Decent men are attracted to decently dressed girls. So dress decently, live decently and marry decently.
