“See, I have engraved you on the palms of My hands” (Isa 49:16)
“When the water in the skin was gone, she put the boy under one of the bushes. Then she went off and sat down about a bowshot away, for she thought, ‘I cannot watch the boy die.’ And as she sat there, she began to sob” (Gen 21:15,16). Why was Hagar sobbing? She had forgotten her old experience of how when she ran away from her mistress, the Lord intervened and sent her back with a promise (Gen 16:6-16). The promise was fullfilled. If she had looked behind and encouraged herself in the Lord, she would not have sobbed. She would have sung, “Bless the Lord, Oh my soul; and forget not all His benefits.”
Look into your past to know your future. It is not uncommon for us to sit with our head on our hands and weep. At times like that, many times I have been encouraged by looking into my past, what a sickly child I was and how the Lord had enabled me to tide over the many crises in my life. A sister rang up and said, “I am very worried about my daughter. The world is so bad.” I asked her, “Did the Lord keep you safe in this bad world?” She said, “Yes.” I asked her, “Can you trust the same Lord to keep her safe?” She said, “Yes.” The next day she phoned me and said that she was feeling calm and confident about her daughter’s future and that the anxiety was gone.
Our God is a faithful God. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. He is trustworthy. The Lord who took care of me in the past, the Lord who is taking care of me now, will also take care of me in the future. Keep singing, “Count your blessings, name them one by one,” and your anxieties will fly away. He has drawn us in the palms of His hands. I often think I don’t need miracles because I am in God’s hands. The more I have come to understand the fatherhood of God, the less demanding I have become in prayer. My Father knows what I need. I don’t need to arm-twist Him to do this and that. Your past is good proof that you have a caring Father. Nothing bad has happened in my life that has not turned out to be for my good. I love God and all things have worked together for my good (Rom 8:28).
Remembering those things that are behind I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me.
