Demon-possessed child
Reading: Matthew 15:21-28
“Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me!
My daughter is demon-possessed and suffering terribly” (Mt 15:22)
This is the desperate cry of many mothers today. “My child shouts, disrespects, smokes, drinks, drugs, wanders, dresses awkwardly, disobeys ...” Mother, take heart. There is a heart-warming story in the Bible to lift up our spirits. What do we learn from this wailing mother? (Mk 7:24-29).
She was a Canaanite woman, looked down upon as unworthy of God’s blessings. At first it appears that Jesus rebuffs the woman but the end result is a stunning miracle. Jesus came to Tyre and Sidon, healed the demon-possessed girl and went back. It looks like He came all the way just to heal this girl. He has concern for your child.
At first He did not answer her. Her faith was being tested. Yet she woudn’t take ‘No’ for an answer. The disciples recommended her case to Jesus. May be others are also praying for your child. Even their prayer was not favourably looked upon by Jesus. Jesus finally broke the silence and said He was sent only to Israel, not for dogs. She understood that she was an outsider but decided to put forth her argument. Christ was taking her through a humbling experience. Humility comes before honour. If we are persistent like the persistent widow, God’s answer is sure to come (Lk 18:1).
The Canaanite woman was improving in prayer. Instead of blaming Christ for rudeness she humbles herself more and came and knelt before Him. When answers are delayed God teaches us to pray more and better. She had Jacob’s attitude: “I will not let you go unless you bless me.” Like a princess she had power with God and man. To put it bluntly, Jesus said, “You are a dog.” She gave credit to His statement: “Yes, Lord. You are my Master and I will be under my Master’s table. My Master is rich. His dog is loved, fed and well cared for. So here I come to claim my share.”
“Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.” For a moment He hid His face but with everlasting kindness He embraced her. Though satan may sift Peter and buffet Paul, yet through God’s grace they were more than conquerors. Even in the face of discouragement, she trusted Him.
Dear mother, if satan has his clutches on your child, bend your knees. The answer is sure to come. Have “great faith.” You will see your child delivered and in the right mind.
