Asher
Reading: Habakkuk 3:17-19
“Then Leah said: How happy I am! The women will call me happy.
So she named him, Asher” (Gen 30:13)
If there was one woman who must be crappy, crying and com-plaining for the way her dreams were turned to ashes, it was Leah. But she learned to find joy in every day small things. Now we are richer but not happier. Some guidelines for happiness are —
¨ Wear a positive spectacle and be optimistic. Don’t sulk when somebody criticises or finds fault in pleasant situations.
¨ Love and be loved. Start with your family. Love makes you vulnerable and so expect to be hurt. That’s the way to learn tolerance. Go to the next step of showing love to your extended family and neighbours. Develop close relationships with them.
¨ Think of others, not just yourself and soon you’ll find joy jumping towards you like a kangaroo. Help wherever you can and volunteer to serve the community in any small or big way possible. It will boost your personal happiness when you see smiling faces around you.
¨ Having a lady friend to whom you can open your heart makes life less stressful and burdens less heavy. Friendless loners tend to be moody and joyless. Sitting with the computer for long hours or even the TV isolates you from real life people. You cannot discuss with a computer or unburden your soul which is a catharsism for a weeping person. Loneliness can affect your health and longevity. “Friendships between women provide solace and understanding in a world that can be really hard on us. The pressure to be a perfect wife, mother and daughter can be unbearable. What a relief it is to find people you can share it all with and be reassured that you are doing just fine” — Hillary Clinton, Politician.
¨ Learn to put away failures and the dark scenes of your life behind your back and focus on the brighter side of life. Each person is good and bad combined. Focus on what’s good in people and try to erase negative thoughts about them from your mind.
¨ Work is a mood elevator and acts as a springboard to happiness. Choose a job that you enjoy (Eccl 9:7). It gives you a sense of accomplishment. However do not become a workaholic and forget the other sources of joy. Have a hobby. Spend time with the Word of God and you will have no time or mood to step into the sanctuary of sadness (Psa 119:111). God’s Word is the best mood elevator I recommend.
