Women, Leaven & Heaven
Reading: John 4:1-42
“The Kingdom of Heaven is like yeast that a woman took and hid
in about sixty pounds of flour until it worked all through the dough” (Mt 13:33)
Jesus compared the Kingdom of God to yeast because they have many parallels. Here Jesus uses the allegory of a woman, I think because women are quiet workers accomplishing great jobs. The Samaritan woman was one such. She was not ashamed to go and tell her people that she had met the Messiah. It sparked a revival in her village which was later on fanned by Philip’s ministry.
1. Yeast is hidden. It gets lost in the dough. Our work may go hidden and unappreciated but it will not remain so for long. So do not get discouraged. Don’t expect congratulations. Just keep up the good work witnessing to one, two and three. Just pull on. The day of small beginning will not be despised. The Samaritan woman would never have thought that she would find a place in the Book of books!
2. Yeast multiplies very fast. If you keep on looking at the dough it may remain as such. But you sleep and see in the morning, you’ll find the flour risen. It takes only a short time but it is certain. One becomes two and two four. One convert will bring in others and so on. Souls will become soulwinners as it happened in the Samaritan village.
3. Yeast is used in small quantity. You may be one person to take the risk and go to dark places. But keep at it and keep praying that the Lord of the Harvest will send workers. He is certain to send because it is His work. It was not the woman but her fruits who urged Jesus to stay back in Samaria.
4. The little yeast affects the whole lump. You may start work in a corner of a town. But soon the whole town will be touched. People will carry the message to their relatives and friends and there will be no stopping it. “There was great joy in that (Samaritan) city” (Acts 8:8).
5. The taste of the dough will be changed for good. You will witness a transformation in the place. Drunkenness and debauchery will stop. You will see holy smile on the faces of harlots. People’s language will be reformed. There will be peace in homes. You can even expect theatres and liquor shops to pull down their shutters. Why not? Expect miracles as in Samaria (Acts 8:6). The change in atmosphere will be obvious. That is revival!
