Passion for Compassion
Reading: Luke 6:32-36
“If your enemy is hungry, give him food to eat; if he is thirsty,
give him water to drink ... and the Lord will reward you (Prov 25:21,22)
Today we will study yet another principle of compassion —
3. The Class Act Principle
Class Act is what we do out of the ordinary, a gallant act. The mercy that the world shows to the needy is excellent. But what we do must be par excellent. That’s what God expects.
God was angry with Babylon because they did not show Israel mercy. Though God handed over Israel to Babylon yet He expected clemency. Sadly they treated them harshly (Isa 47:6). Prisoners are usually roughed up, but God expects kindness.
Jesus took this teaching to greater heights when He taught: “If you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even sinners do that. And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, expecting to be repaid in full. But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting anything back. Then your reward will be great and you will be daughters of the Most High, because He is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful just as your Father is merciful” (Lk 6:32-36). We need to reach the Father’s standard!
Even during the love-your-neighbour-hate-your-enemy dispensation, God’s law was that if you found your enemy’s mobile lying somewhere you should return it to him. If you see him struggling to change a flat tyre you should stop and help (Ex 23:4,5). The widow fed Elisha when she herself was starving.
Solomon teaches the same principle (Prov 25:21,22). David’s sparing Saul’s life and caring for his son Mephibosheth are class acts. “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil by good” (Rom 12:21). If you have enemies, be on the lookout for an opportunity to help him or his family in some way. The world expects Christians to be different from ordinary citizens who invite their friends for dinners and give them gifts. So try it on your enemies.
“We are looking for Jesus in the wrong places. He wanders the streets in disguise,” says Philip Yancey. Recognize Him.
