My Child, My Friend!
Reading: Romans 12:9-21
“Cherished by my mother” (Prov 4:3)
Let’s see some more aspects on how to keep our children close to us —
5. Be firm in disciplining. When you instruct your children and are sure they have understood it, if they do not carry it out (for no reason) be sure to give them the prescribed punishment. Don’t lose your patience in the meanwhile. In order to avoid the beating, we stretch the ordeal to shoutings and threatenings, losing our temper in the bargain. Don’t waste years in floppy disciplinary methods. Disciplining gives the child a sense of security. At the same time don’t go by the law. Be flexible reasonably.
6. Don’t hold a grudge. Don’t carry over your anger till night. Learn to be natural and show love. “We were gentle among you, just as a nursing mother cherishes her own children... affectio-nately longing for you ... we exhorted and comforted, and charged every one of you as a father does his own children” (1 Thess 2:7, 8,11). You can clearly see that love outweighs strictness. Be careful not to tilt to the other side. Never yell at your children and get irritated when they yell back. If there is a misunderstanding, sit and listen first and then talk it over with them.
7. Understand the child.Don’t be shocked when your eight or ten year old talks about sex. Don’t react violently and give them a feeling that sex is horrible. Let them talk freely. Then give them gentle answers, explanations and corrections. Children need parents at home, not preachers! Let them have the confidence that you will always listen to their problems, be it sex or anything. Let them take you to be the person who will clear their doubts frankly and truthfully.
8. Don’t cheat the child. This generation will pooh pooh at your stork-and-baby stories. Give information suitable for their age. They hear all kinds of stuff in school. Your children know more than what you think they know. Their world is full of boys and girls who teach them the wrong things. Be the first to teach them the right things. Make a surprise visit to the school or playground or their friend’s house now and then without acting like James Bond! Keep up your promises. Don’t threaten them of a doctor with a needle, everytime you want to have things done.
Childhood will not last long. Enjoy every stage of your life.
We will see some more friendship hints tomorrow.
