Romance, Where?
Reading: Song of Solomon 2
“There was Isaac, showing endearment to Rebekah” (Gen 26:8)
Whatever happened to all the romance that was there during courtship and honeymoon? How is it that it disappeared like dew under a hot sun? What can we do to bring back the lost romance? These are questions that haunt every couple. They fell in love and married. They were excited with each other after marriage. Then the routine set in. He went to work and she cooked. They started fighting for small things. Then the baby and a dull routine. The romantic feelings had long ago died. Then the horrible feeling creeps in: “Have I made a mistake in marrying this man?”
Something worse happens. The romantic feelings are resurrected when other men show affection. Passions are aroused. The very spiritual persons sense the danger of sin and curb those romantic feelings. The not-so-spiritual think, “My spouse has changed after marriage. He is not the same. I have no feelings. I have made a mistake in marrying him.”
Beware of the snake in the garden. Every beautiful garden called marriage has snakes in it. They must be killed. One such snake is the feeling that you have lost the romantic emotions of marriage and you must seek it elsewhere. Countless have listened to the lie of the devil and developed emotional and physical relationship with persons outside the boundary of marriage. People have left their spouses to marry the one they are attracted to, only to find that again the romance wilted after a short period. Beware! Keep on loving your husband against all odds whether you feel like loving or not. Romantic feelings are only emotions that do not last long. Now is the time to settle down for love, commitment and companionship.
Esau and Jacob were adult sons when Isaac was caressing Rebekah. You must make every effort to keep the flame of romance alive. But if it is missing do not get discouraged. A marriage doesn’t survive on romance alone. The more stable pillars of marriage are commitment and faithfulness. Affairs in search of romance lead you nowhere. It destroys your marriage and soul. So strengthen the walls of your own marriage. You will find love blooming again and children and grandchildren complete the circle.
If you had been faithful to each other you will look back at all the struggles and rejoice. If not the guilt, sorrow and tarnished image will haunt you forever. The scent of the rose never fades, the problem is with your nose!
