"Avoid every kind of evil" (1Thess 5: 22)
Is pornography sin? A person with a good conscience will never ask this question. He knows it is sin. Nature itself tells us that it is not right. The very fact that you want to do it secretly tells you that it is sin. In a Christian Leaders Conference, a slip was given to see anonymously how many watched porn. A whopping 75% confessed to it. We are in the days of "Everybody-is-doingit." Does a dirty thing become clean just because the majority does it? Never! Was there pornography in Bible times? Does the Bible condemn it? Let’s see -
Seeing nakedness is condemned in the Bible. Even as early as Noah, it called down a curse (Gen 9:20-27). God covered man’s nakedness (3:21). God’s EYES are too pure to look at evil (Hab 1:13). We are commanded to be perfect as the heavenly Father (Mt 5:48). So who is a righteous person? The Bible defi nes him as: "He who walks righteously... who shuts his EYES from seeing evil; He will dwell on high...Your EYES will see the King in His beauty; They will SEE the land that is very far off" (Isa 33:15-17). If you want to experience heaven on earth, if you want to see the King in His beauty, if you want to visualize the far off land, you must shut your eyes from seeing dirty things.
Eye is the portal of a person. What goes into the eyes, goes to the mind and heart which whip the body to act on it. If you see bad things, the light within you will be extinguished and you will be inclined to do bad things. On the other hand, if you view good things, you gravitate towards noble acts. That’s why Jesus said, "The EYE is the lamp of the body. If your EYES are good, your whole body will be full of light. But if your EYES are bad, your whole body will be full of darkness. If then the light within you is darkness, how great is that darkness!" (Mt 6:22, 23). The seriousness of watching pornography can be understood from the statement of Jesus: "If your right EYE causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell" (5:29). What is implied here? If you do not control your eyes from sinning, you will land up in hell head to foot!
Yes, there was porn during Bible days. "Woe to him who gives drink to his neighbors, pouring it from the wineskin till they are drunk, so that he can gaze on their naked bodies" (Hab 2:15). Seeing the nakedness of the spouse is the privilege of the married. Even within marriage, imitating what you see in porn is not right. Writing to the Thessalonian Christians, Paul admonishes them to learn to treat their wives in a way that is holy and honorable, not in passionate lust like the non-Christians did (1 Thess 4:4,5). Spouses watching porn together is also not right because you gaze on the nakedness of others.
If you have never seen porn, don’t be tempted to see what it looks like. You may get hooked forever. It is like alcohol or drugs. Resist the temptation to press the button or peep into somebody’s mobile. If you are already hooked, here’s what you can do -
Let your daily prayer be "Lord, turn my EYES away from looking at worthless things" (Psa 119:37).
"With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible" (Mt 19:26).
