The Power of the Printed Page
For nearly a year I was worrying about the people in bungalows and two-storey buildings. We present the Goodnews to the poor, villagers and children. But what about the rich? I kept on praying. Then this year I thought of an idea. Why not gift them a New Testament?
I thought of first trying the Call Centre near our house. When I walked over there with much trepidation the manager said “Hello ma’am. Please be seated.” When I explained to her my mission she was more than willing. She called her superior over phone and then somebody and then said, “OK.” She collected all staff in one place.
I started, “I want to give you a gift of an internationally famous book and the best seller every year. When Viswaroopam has become internationally famous we want to know what it is all about. But if it is the Bible we think it is a book for Christians. No, it is not a book for Christians. It is what God has said for each individual on this earth. You must know its contents...” I talked for 4 minutes.
There was enthusiasm and beaming smiles on the faces as they stepped forward to take a copy. I was so moved. One man shook my hands. I distributed 75 New Testaments that day. Not one refused.
Then I went to a small school near our house with friends. The Headmistress was thrilled when I told her my mission. “Please say something to the students and then give the books” she said excitedly. There we gave 30 to the students and five to teachers. In a college after I spoke to the girls on Women’s Day, 74 helped themselves to the book.
Now I am going from house to house. Not even 5% refuse it. One lady said, “Thank you so much for giving me a chance to read the Bible.” Many are genuinely interested. Looks like I’ll have to do some follow-up. I have so far given away 300 New Testaments.
Most people would like to read the Bible but they won’t be so interested to go to a Christian shop, buy one and read. But if it is placed in their hands they would read. People want to read, but we have not given them the Word.
I have learnt to open the gates of bungalows, walk through the garden and knock at the door. I felt uneasy to start with but then I thought of Jesus, how He was mocked, spat upon, flogged and killed. None of these things have happened to me. Then why hesitate? My little friends who accompany me, Nikila (11), Nirupa (8) and Vivilia (8) are a great encouragement and support to me.
It is so simple. You can do it too. If you become a member of the Gideons International you can get ample supplies of New Testaments. Get a friend and boldly proceed.
