It was wartime in Burma (now Myanmar). There were wounded everywhere lying on the street. A Roman Catholic Father was walking along, helping the wounded and taking them to the hospital. His eyes fell on a tiny baby thrown near a garbage can. The mother and father lay dead nearby. He took pity on the baby and took her to his orphanage where there were already fifty girls. He named her Geetha. Father had a special love for Geetha.
Geetha grew up. Now and then she would go to the Father and ask him for pencil or rubber or color pencils and Father would give her. One day Geetha saw a bus load of children singing and dancing inside the bus. She asked the other children what it was and they said the girls were going on an excursion. Geetha was so taken up by the joyous sight that she went to Father and said, “Father, I want to go on an excursion in a bus.” Father smiled and said, “Geetha my child, excursions are expensive. You ask God.”
So, Geetha started praying in dead earnest. Every day she prayed morning and night. One day a bus entered their orphanage. It was made of dazzling gold. It was gorgeously decorated with flowers. The driver and conductor were in smart uniform. All the orphanage children ran to the bus and Geetha also ran thanking God for answering her prayers. The conductor had a long list of names. As he started reading the names, the girls whose names were called out hopped into the bus, merrily shouting and laughing.
Geetha waited for her name. The list was going down but her name was not called. Geetha was becoming anxious. Finally the conductor closed the door and whistled. “Wait,” said Geetha. “Please check again. The bus has been sent for me.” The conductor said, “Sorry, baby, your name is not here and I am instructed to take only those whose names are listed.” The conductor blew the whistle, the driver honked the horn and whirrr went the bus.
“My name is not there?” screamed Geetha and woke up from her dream. She started sobbing and weeping, “My name is not there? Why is not my name there?” All the children in the dormitory got up. They switched on the light. Father came in to see what the commotion was all about. “Who put on the light?” he sternly asked. “Not me,” said one and lay down. “Not me,” “Not me,” “Not me” said every one and lay down. Geetha also said, “Not me” and lay down. Father put off the light and went away.
Geetha was sobbing, “Why was not my name there? Why was not my name there? It was I who prayed for the bus.” She drifted off into sleep. Every day she’d sit before her food and sob, “My name
was not there, my name was not there.” “Where?” asked the children. But Geetha wouldn’t reply. After three days (in her dream) God showed her her suitcase. Banu’s hairclip was there; Rita’s scented eraser lay in a corner; Danny’s foreign pencil lay across. God showed her one by one and said, “Geetha, you can’t get into the golden bus with all these things in your suitcase.”
Geetha got up in the morning and opened her suitcase. She gathered all the stolen items and put them inside her school bag. She briskly walked to school. “Banu, here’s your hair clip. I’m sorry I took it.” “Rita, please forgive me. Your scented eraser was with me.” “Danny, Danny, did you miss your foreign pencil? I’m sorry. Here it is.” Geetha returned all other stolen items too. Her heart was filled with peace.
That day she lay down peacefully and slept. In her dream she saw a big register being opened. There were many names in it. A beautiful hand wrote the name “GEETHA” there in golden letters with a golden pen. Geetha got up in the morning and was jumping with joy. “My name is there, my name is there,” she gleefully told all her friends. “Where?” they asked. But Geetha just kept jumping.
Do you know God has a big book called the Book of Life? Only those whose names are written there can enter heaven. All those whose names are not there will be thrown in hell fire prepared for Satan and his servants. So lead a God-pleasing life and ask God to write your name in the Book of Life.
