Pinky was a little girl brought up by her aunt because both her parents had died. Pinky was bright and lovely, a God- fearing and good-mannered girl. Her aunt had a daughter too of Pinky’s age. Her name was Rita who was a spoilt child. The aunt thought Pinky was a burden and thought of ways to get rid of her, even though Pinky washed vessels and everybody’s clothes and helped in cooking and cleaned the house.
One day it was heavily snowing outside. The aunt thought this was the right time to get rid of Pinky. So she sent her to pick strawberries. She had a threadbare sweater on and carried some dry bread given by her aunt with a bottle of water. Pinky was shivering in the cold. She walked a long distance looking for strawberries but could find none. Tired and worn out she sat under a tree to eat her bread.
She was about to take a bite when she saw an old woman coming towards her. She held out her hand and begged. Pinky felt sorry for the old lady. “Sit down” she said, “We’ll eat together. When the old lady sat down Pinky gave half the bread and she ate the other half. She shared the water too. Pinky started to cry and told the old lady that her aunt would beat her if she went without strawberries.
The woman comforted her and gave her a small basket of strawberries. Pinky was overjoyed. She thanked the woman and left. The old lady blessed and sent her.
Pinky arrived home and gave the strawberries to her aunt. Her aunt was surprised she could find them in snow and asked her where she found them. “An old lady gave me” said Pinky. As she spoke, beautiful, costly pearls fell off her mouth. Mother and daughter picked them. As Pinky told the rest of the story more pearls fell.
Aunt wanted the same for her daughter Rita. She covered her with a heavy sweater, packed her Biriyani and Gulabjamun for lunch and sent her to find strawberries. Rita went straight to the tree Pinky mentioned and sat down to eat. The old woman appeared and begged. Rita looked at her lunch and then at the thin shivering old woman. Then she said, “My mummy has packed only for one person” and proceeded to eat. “Bless me and go” Rita said. The old woman kept her hand on her head and went away.
Rita arrived home and excitedly called, “Mummy.” A frog jumped from her mouth. She talked further and more frogs jumped out. Her mother was angry and sent Pinky to wash a big bundle of clothes to the
river. Pinky went to the river and finding it frozen started to sing. Pearls fell off her mouth. A prince came riding on his horse and was arrested by Pinky’s song and her beauty. He took Pinky with him to his Kingdom and married her.
Be kind to everyone you see and speak only kind words. God will bless you.
