The King had a brinjal garden and the brinjals were very sweet and nice. The King and Queen enjoyed the brinjals everyday. The court jester Thenaliraman wanted to eat the brinjals. So he told his wife that he would steal some brinjals and bring them in the night for dinner. “Don’t do it. The King would definitely find out” objected his wife. But Thenaliraman said that he would take care of it.
Night he stole some brinjals and they all had a sumptuous dinner. Thenaliraman’s son slept in the verandah. In the middle of the night Thenaliraman sprinkled water on his son and said, “Come in and sleep. It’s raining outside.” So the son groggily came in and slept.
The next day the King noticed some brinjals missing and asked Thenali about it. He denied stealing brinjals. Let’s ask your son, said the king and the lad was brought. “What did you have for dinner?” asked the King. The lad promptly replied, “Brinjal curry.” The King looked at Thenali. “What does a small child know sir? Ask him if it rained yesterday night and decide for yourself.” The King asked the boy, “Did it rain yesterday night?” And the boy said, “O yes. I had to go in and sleep because it rained.” The King believed Thenaliraman and let him go.
