Some people don’t like others to shine. When others prosper and shine they feel very bad. It is called envy or jealousy. There is a story about a man who killed himself through envy. Sudhan and Anand were very good in sports and games. They were rivals. But Anand outshone Sudhan. People decided to erect a statue for Anand who was a celebrated champion in public games and did erect. Sudhan’s stomach churned. Being a rival of the honored athlete he was so envious that he vowed to destroy that statue. Every night he went out into the darkness and chiselled at the statue’s base in an effort to undermine its foundation and make it fall. At last he succeeded. It did fall—but it fell on him and he died. He became a victim of his own envy.
If you love people you will not be envious when they succeed. You will rejoice with them.
