Do you know what a silambu is? It is an ornament worn around the ankles by ancient women in India. It is a hollow ring with beads or precious stones inside, that made a jal jal noise as the womenfolk walked.
Now, there was a couple — Kovalan and Kannagi. They went through a hard time and Kannagi gave one silambu to Kovalan to sell it and start a business. Both went to Madurai. Kovalan went to sell it to a goldsmith. He was waiting to be paid.
Suddenly soldiers from the King’s palace came and arrested Kovalan. The Queen’s silambu was stolen. In a bid to escape, the thief informed the palace that it was Kovalan who stole the Queen’s silambu and was selling it to a goldsmith. The King sent soldiers and had him killed. The silambu was taken to the palace.
News reached Kannagi. She was distraught. The poor girl wanted to prove her husband’s innocence. She was taken to the King’s presence. She cried in the presence of the King and Queen. She demanded that the silambu recovered from her husband be brought. Whereupon she broke it in the court for everyone to see. The silambu broke and precious stones fell out. It was her’s indeed, for the Queen’s silambu had precious pearls inside. The King was mortified at the injustice done to an innocent man because of impatience. He fell back saying Kovalan was not the thief but he himself was the thief and died.
How careful we have to be before judging or punishing others!
